Provide a status update for your Innovation.

The first appictaion developed on the Adaptive Learning Platform is imagineMath, designed to improve math learning outcomes.  We completed an initial pilot of the intervention during the 2014 - 2015 school year at two rural schools.  We are currently in the process of scaling the intervention to 50 schools and are conducting a RCT to test impact at scale in partnership with J-PAL and faculty at Columbia University and University of Pennsyvania. .

How does your innovation work?

We have developed a novel tablet-based learning platform that provides children with dynamically tailored adaptive content suitable to their individual learning level—using daily practice and testing to master each topic before advancing to the next one. The platform runs on inexpensive tablets and does not require constant electricity or Internet or computer literacy among teachers.

Students in each class can be assigned to the same set of tablets and a customized learning curriculum is available when each student logs into the system.  Auto-generated metrics allow teachers to target students most in need of attention in real time. The software modules have been integrated with the Indian education board math curriculum, promoting smooth classroom integration. Given an environment where neither teachers nor parents expect children to do homework, this intervention drastically boosts practice. 

What Evidence do you have that your Innovation works?

Findings from a pilot study over the 2014 school year at rural schools suggest that the tablet program substantially improves basic skills attainment. Among the bottom two terciles of the baseline distribution (i.e. remedial and average children), the test score gains for students who received the intervention were 0.37 standard deviations higher than for those who did not.  We are now conducting a rigorous randomized control trial.

We are scaling the intervention to 50 schools where it will be used by approximately 10,000 students.

What is your strategy for expanding use of your innovation?

We have commenced commercialization of the platform and also making our adaptive applications available via app stores to reach a larger base of users. 

Next Steps

We are currently developing partnerships with governments, NGOs, and donors to deploy the platform across South Asia and also exploring other geographies.
